Friday we met Jack Passion, 25-yr old World Beard phenom (on right). He is the author of a new book, his handbook on facial hair. He commented on our beards, and told us how much he likes them. “Your beards are everything that’s right with beards in the world today.” It was a proud moment for us both.
In yesterdays competition he took home the world title in the full beard category, and third place best in show. I think I’d trust his opinion.
after a grueling day of judging and posing and styling and strutting, the results are in. chin and timbeard both finished a close fourth in their respective categories. the competition was fierce, as expected, and those crowned probably deserved it more. probably. this has been a journey never to forget, and though not crowned, all were champions today. the question that remains is…norway 2011?
Today is the day that we have been dreaming of for years. We will stand before the judges and beside the greats to be deemed worthy or not. Most likely not, but to be able to share the stage with these people is enough of an honor.
Yesterday we had the parade of beards around downtown Anchorage, followed by a social event with a fun pre-event called the Grizzly Bear. Timbeard missed entering in the whaler division. Chin was in the brown bear category and failed to place. But when you’re up against 2007’s full beard and best overall champion you really don’t have much of a chance.
We will be updating soon with more pictures and such, we’ve just been way too busy with the different events.
Walking in to the community center at Kincaid Park in Anchorage, we we never expected we would run into all the champions we had seen on the WBMC website over the past couple years. We saw a lot of the greats, ate brats side by side with the guys we will compete against just a couple long days from now, and listened to the sounds of an “oom-pah-pah” band set up in the corner. The great champions from Germany, England, and all over the US graced the room with their award winning facial stylings. I felt a great sense of pride being in the same room with all the greats, and also such shame, for we have no right to share the stage with them. We sized up the competition, and they look fierce. Our rookie beards will surely be squashed to bits by the sheer magnitude of bearded awesomeness in Anchorage and it’s outlying areas.
The beard parade on Friday through downtown Anchorage should be a lot of fun. You should be able to find live coverage of the event on your local station, so tune in. We’ll be swamped the next couple days, but we’ll try to update from the phone as much as we can. Here’s a brief sneak peak at the cookout from last night.
